Best physics dissertation in Portugal authored by INESC TEC researcher
Orlando Frazão, researcher at INESC TEC’s Optoelectronics and Electronic Systems Unit (UOSE), received the Fernando Bragança Gil 2012 Award for the best PhD thesis in Physics written in Portugal between 2009 and 2010. This award is given by the Portuguese Physics Society.

The thesis entitled Sensores em Fibra Ótica baseados em interferometria e efeitos não-lineares (Optical fibre sensors based on interferometry and non-linear effects) contributed to the development of sensors based on photonic crystal fibres. The 42-year-old researcher was pioneer in Portugal in applying these structures as a sensing element.
The dissertation was defended at the Faculty of Science of the University of Porto (FCUP) on 4 December 2009, supervised by José Luís Santos.

The first paper by Orlando Frazão on this theme was also featured on the cover of Laser & Photonics Reviews in 2008. The researcher also published two other papers in the journal PHOTONIC SPECTRA.
During his PhD, Orlando Frazão published about 30 papers in international journals and in 2007 he received a Best Student Paper award in one of the most important conferences in this area. He has published over 200 papers in international journals and reached over a thousand citations (ISI).
The Fernando Bragança Gil award is given twice a year by the Portuguese Physics Society to the best Physics dissertation at a Portuguese university.
About Orlando Frazão
Orlando Frazão received his degree in Physics Engineering (Optoelectronics and Electronics) from the University of Aveiro, Portugal, and concluded his PhD in Physics at the University of Porto in 2009. From 1997 to 1998, he worked at the Institute of Telecommunications, Aveiro. Presently, he is a senior researcher at the Optoelectronics and Electronic Systems Unit (UOSE) at INESC Porto. He has published about 300 papers, mainly in international journals and conference proceedings, and his present research interests include optical fibre sensors and optical communications. The researcher is a senior member of SPIE (the International Society for Optics and Photonics) and director of SPOF (the Portuguese Society for Research and Development in Optics and Photonics).
