City of Porto welcomes second edition of Summer School on artificial intelligence

Young M.Sc., Ph.D. and post-doctorate students, as well as researchers and professionals working in computer vision and artificial intelligence are once again challenged to participate in the VISion Understanding and Machine intelligence (visum) Summer School.

07th March 2014

After the success of the first edition of this Summer School, which gathered almost three dozen students from 13 different countries in 2013, INESC TEC has once again joined the University of Porto and its Faculty of Engineering (FEUP) in order to give students the opportunity to learn more about the use of fundamental concepts of computer vision and artificial intelligence in real scenarios. The visum Summer School will take place between 3 and 10 July at FEUP.

According to the organising committee, “At visum, the students will have the opportunity to learn how the intelligent vision and processing systems of a drone operate, how it is possible to map the information acquired with a Kinect to print a miniature model using a 3D printer, or how to analyse objects in digital images, such as the face recognition algorithms used by Google or Facebook.”

The programme of the Summer School includes training sessions in fundamental, industrial and application areas, other than hands-on sessions and a poster session. This year, the students will have the opportunity to learn with world renowned experts, such as Cristian Sminchisescu (Lund University Sweden), Vincent Lepetit (Technische Universität Graz, Austria), Juergen Sturm (Technische Universität München, Germany) and Russell Beale (University of Birmingham, United Kingdom).

The panel of speakers also includes Portuguese experts, such as Jaime Cardoso (INESC TEC and FEUP), Hugo Proença (Department of Computer Science, University of Beira Interior) and André Marçal (INESC TEC and Faculty of Science of the University of Porto). The industry session also includes important names, such as Siemens S.A., E-Commerce Sonae MC and Albatroz, which will demonstrate the industrial potential of practices and technologies in the areas of computer vision and artificial intelligence.

Also according to the event organisers, “we not only want to create a forum to exchange knowledge at the highest level in order to improve the national structural knowledge programme, but also to stress the importance of the work developed in an academic environment which has an impact on the economy and vice versa. It is also important to mention the event’s cultural diversity as participants from different realities will get to exchange their experiences.”
