CTM researchers publish papers in the Journal of Surgical Oncology

Maria João Cardoso, Hélder Oliveira and Jaime Cardoso, researchers at INESC TEC’s Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM), have recently published a paper, titled “Assessing Cosmetic Results after Breast Conserving Surgery”, in the Journal of Surgical Oncology.

26th May 2014

The paper reviews the aesthetic assessment of breast cancer surgical treatment, from the initial subjective methods to the objective methods used today. “The aesthetic assessment is relevant to improve work practices and an integral part of surgical planning, as it helps choose the most adequate treatment options for each patient,” states Jaime Cardoso. The paper suggests that the computer analysis of breast cancer conservative treatment images has been having promising results, and that including volumetric information using low-cost solutions can lead to an objective assessment method that will help obtain good aesthetic results.

The paper was written as part of the European project PICTURE (Patient Information Combined for the Assessment of Specific Surgical Outcomes in Breast Cancer), where the goal is to develop a tool that predicts the aesthetic result of surgery.

The Journal of Surgical Oncology is a scientific journal that specialises in surgical oncology and surgical science. The journal includes papers on experimental and laboratory studies associated with surgical oncology, as well as opinions on current themes or brief descriptions of technical innovations.
