Fraunhofer award was given to a paper on retina disease
The paper entitled “Quantitative Assessment of Central Serous Chorioretinopathy in Angiographic Sequences of Retinal Images”, written by Carlos Ferreira, Jorge Silva and Ana Maria Mendonça, collaborators of INESC TEC’s Centre for Biomedical Engineering Research, alongside Susana Penas, Ophthalmology Specialist at São João Hospital Centre and Professor at FMUP, won the Best Paper Award in the category entitled Full Papers Summarizing a Msc Thesis from the Associação Fraunhofer Portugal Research (Fraunhofer Portugal).

This award, which was given in the 6th IEEE Portuguese Meeting on Bioengineering (ENBENG 2019), held between 22 and 23 February at the Instituto Superior de Engenharia de Lisboa, recognises the best scientific paper in terms of their practical usefulness that was submitted within the Fraunhofer Portugal's fields of action.
The central serous chorioretinopathy is a retinal disease in which there is a fluid leakage to the subretinal space, resulting in a significant loss of the visual acuity. A set of images of fluorescein angiography examinations are frequently used for the analysis of the leakage. The paper consisted in an automatic supporting tool for diagnosis, which allows to detect and to segment the leakages, as well as to describe the progression of the area and the intensity of the leakage throughout the examination.
IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS) is the world’s largest international society of biomedical engineers, bringing together around 97 countries. EMBS in Portugal has been responsible for the organisation of ENBENG, a biennial conference dedicated to biomedical engineering, which aims to promote Bioengineering and Biomedical Engineering research, to raise awareness on these fields, and to reinforce the cooperation among researchers, universities and institutions working in these areas.
The researchers mentioned in this news piece are associated with INESC TEC and UP-FEUP.
