INESC Porto acknowledged in international journal

An article of the Optoelectronics and Electronic Systems Unit (UOSE) was chosen for the December issue of the Laser & Photonics Reviews journal.

17th April 2009

The article entitled "Optical Sensing with Photonic Crystal Fibers" was authored by researchers Orlando Frazão, José Luís Santos, Francisco M. Araújo and Luís Alberto Ferreira. The aim with this article was to explain the demonstrations of optical fibre sensors based on photonic crystal fibres (PCF).

Photonic crystal fibres are a new class of optical fibres that have the ability to confine light in hollow cores. Thus, they are much more effective than conventional fibres and their use in optical fibre communications, lasers, or even gas monitoring becomes highly functional.

The photograph chosen for the cover of the journal was taken from the same article from UOSE and it represents a cross-section of a PCF fibre in which microstructures were written.
