INESC Porto concludes study for EC on the impact of increasing renewable energies

The Power Systems Unit (USE) has recently handed in the final version of the report of the project "Study on the impact of large renewable deployment on European Electricity Higher Voltage Systems", requested by the Institute for Energy of the Joint Research Centre (JRC-IE) of the European Commission.

26th December 2009

Led by INESC Porto, the project, which included the collaboration of the University of Cagliari (Italy), assessed the long-term impact (2020 – 2030) of an increase in renewable energies in the European grids, based on case studies in Portugal and Sardinia, analysed, not only in stationary mode, but also in terms of energy supply reliability.

Manuel Matos was the coordinator of the project, with the collaboration of João Peças Lopes, Ricardo Ferreira and Mauro Rosa. Other than the University of Cagliari, partner of the application, the project included the collaboration of the Federal University of Itajubá, Brazil (Armando Leite da Silva) for reliability studies. The studies in Portugal were supported by REN, the Portuguese system operator, which supplied information and planning data on the system and distribution grid that were necessary for the studies.
