INESC Porto contributes to the integration of wind power in the electrical system

The Power Systems Unit (USE) of INESC Porto will be participating in another collaborative project in the context of the Energy 2009 programme (FP7) entitled TWENTIES (“Transmission system operation with large penetration of Wind and other renewable Electricity sources in Networks by means of innovative Tools and Integrated Energy Solutions”).

03rd November 2009

The aim with this project is to develop demonstration projects that will make it possible to overcome several obstacles regarding a larger integration of wind power, namely off-shore, and its contribution to the operation of the power system.

INESC Porto’s team will participate actively in the development of the “Virtual Power Plant” (VPP) concept, namely regarding the control, exploitation and integration of large off-shore parks and interconnected ground-based grid. INESC Porto will also participate in the definition of the services provided by the VPP at the levels of frequency and voltage.

The consortium contemplates several European partners, from transmission system operators, manufacturing companies and manufacturers, to research institutions, with INESC Porto being the sole Portuguese institution participating in the project.

The project is coordinated by João Peças Lopes, with the collaboration of Carlos Moreira from USE.
