INESC Porto develops humanoid robot that “hears” and dances

In collaboration with the Robotics and Intelligent Systems Unit (ROBIS) and the Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science Laboratory (LIACC), the Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) has developed an algorithm that understands the synchronisation of rhythm and this algorithm has been incorporated into a humanoid robot at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP).

The project has been developed by João Lobato Oliveira, who is responsible for the robot being able to “hear” the beat of the music, and Catarina Santiago, who is responsible for the movement coordination component. Both are researchers at INESC Porto and students at FEUP.     

The new software for the humanoid robot introduces a high level of creativity, adapting musical rhythms that vary overtime and in the future it will be able to interact more with humans.

Armando Sousa from ROBIS and Luís Paulo Reis from the University of Minho and LIACC both participated in this project with Fabien Gouyon from UTM as the project supervisor.
