INESC Porto develops project to detect harmful agents on the environment

The Optoelectronics and Electronic Systems Unit (UOSE) is working on a new exchange project between Portugal and Brazil – AMBISENSE, which will make it possible to timely detect the existence of harmful agents on the environment.

15th December 2010

AMBISENSE will be concluded in December 2010, and its main aims are to develop a theoretical study and a multi-sensing prototype to monitor physical parameters that are important to environmental monitoring in the water. The development of technologically advanced systems to measure physical parameters, such as water flow, refractive index, temperature, salinity or others, will make it possible to timely detect harmful agents on the environment.

Other than INESC Porto, the project’s partners include the Military Engineering Institute, the Celso Suckow da Fonseca Federal Centre for Technology Education, the Federal University of Pará, Federal University of Espírito Santo and the Fluminense Federal University.

Parallel to this project, the Unit is also involved in another exchange project between Portugal and Brazil – “Study and Development of Optical Sensors to Monitor Environmental Parameters Remotely”. Both projects are financed by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).

As a result of these projects, the first optical fibre sensor has already been implemented to measure the refractive index. This work has been recently presented at the 4th European Workshop on Optical Fiber Sensors, organized by INESC Porto.
