INESC Porto helps Greek electricity company prepare application for European Funding

With the help of INESC Porto’s Information and Computer Graphics Systems Unit (USIG), the Power Systems Unit (USE) coordinated and prepared a proposal for the European Programme NER300, on behalf of the Public Power Corporation (PPC), the largest Greek electricity company.

10th March 2011

This programme is destined to partially fund projects related to energy efficiency and network management (including the introduction of renewable energies such as wind farms and photovoltaic panels) and the reduction of CO2 emissions, by introducing cleaner technology that produces less pollution.

USE will be involved in looking at the evolution of CO2 emissions before 2025 and considering various scenarios involving renewable energy generation and loads, identifying the investment that will be required and preparing the technical documentation to support the proposal.

The partnership INESC Porto and PPC began in March 2010 when the first contract was signed. The objective of this contract is to define the architecture of a system to control electrical energy networks in close to forty Greek islands, including Crete and Rhodes, and look into how they communicate with the Public Power Corporation’s plant in Athens.

João Tomé Saraiva will lead the project along with Jorge Pereira, André Moreira, Luís Seca and Mauro Rosa, from USE and Paulo Monteiro from USIG.
