INESC Porto helps organise conference on the "Applications of Optics and Photonics"

The Optoelectronics and Electronic Systems Unit (UOSE) at INESC Porto was involved in organising the first international conference on the applications of optics and photonics, that took place in Braga between 3rd and 7th May.

This conference was organised by the recently established Portuguese Society for Research and Development of Optics and Photonics, and was supported by the International Society for Optics and Photonics- SPIE, the International Commission for Optics - ICO, the European Optical Society - EOS and the Optical Society of America – OSA. Representatives from each of these organisations participated in the conference.

UOSE was directly involved in organising the conference on various levels: Technical Chair (Orlando Frazão), Local Organisation Commission (Ireneu Dias, José Manuel Baptista, José Ramiro Fernandes, Orlando Frazão, Pedro Jorge), Programme Commission (José Manuel Baptista, Orlando Frazão), Technical Session Chairs (Orlando Frazão, Ireneu Dias, Manuel Joaquim Marques, Pedro Jorge) and the International Scientific Commission (José Ramiro Fernandes).

Two of the five prizes for student projects were awarded to Marta Ferreira and Ismail Zibaii, researchers from UOSE. The President of SPIE, Katarina Svanberg, from the Lund University Hospital in Sweden attended the official award ceremony.

Researchers from UOSE were invited to two take part in lectures and they also presented 19 other projects (4 oral presentations and 15 posters).

In addition to the conference on “Applications of Optics and Photonics”, it is also important to note that at the General assembly on 5th May, Orlando Frazão was elected president of the Portuguese Society’s Fiscal Council for Research and Development in Optics and Photonics.
