INESC Porto researcher named Vice-President of the EURO
José Fernando Oliveira, a researcher at the Manufacturing Systems Engineering Unit (UESP) at INESC Porto, was recently named Vice President of the EURO (Association of European Operational Research Societies). This association brings together European societies working in Operational Research (OR) and their main responsibilities include organising the EURO Working Groups and the Mini EURO Conferences.

This nomination shows that the scientific community has clearly acknowledged José Fernando’s regular activity and his continuous and exceptional contributions to this area in the promotion of Operational Research on both a national and European level. José Fernando was part of the APDIO (Associação Portuguesa de Investigação Operacional - the Portuguese Association of Operational Research) for many years and played a decisive role in the development of the association. He has also actively participated in the EURO activities, representing the Portuguese community in various meetings and initiatives.
With regard to his international activity, he was one of the founders of the ESICUP, the EURO Special Interest Group on Cutting and Packing and he is currently one of the coordinators. José Fernando has worked long and hard in various domains of Operational Research, focusing on Cutting and packing problems and the use and development of metaheuristic approaches from a technical point of view.
