INESC Porto Researcher presented with award by the International Society for Optics and Photonics
Luís Fernandes, a researcher from the Optoelectronics and Electronic Systems Unit (UOSE) and Doctorate student at the Faculty of Science of the University of Porto (FCUP), was awarded three thousand dollars by the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE).

Ireneu Dias, Assistant Manager of UOSE, describes these types of awards as being “extremely competitive” they represent “the acknowledgement of the work of a researcher in their area of specialisation within their doctorate programme”.
Luís Fernandes, who appeared in the Limelight in INESC Porto’s monthly bulletin in February, is working on his doctorate programme in conjunction with Toronto University, Canada and his supervisors are Paulo Marques from FCUP, Peter Herman and Stewart Aitchison from the University of Toronto
SPIE is an international society well respected in the areas of Optics and Photonics. It was founded in 1955 to advance light-based technologies. Serving more than 180,000 constituents from 168 countries, the Society advances emerging technologies through interdisciplinary information exchange, continuing education, publications, patent precedent and career and professional growth. SPIE annually organises and sponsors approximately 25 major technical forums, exhibitions, and education programs in North America, Europe, Asia, and the South Pacific. The EWOFS conference organised by UOSE is one of these events.
