INESC TEC concludes innovative music project

The Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) at INESC TEC recently concluded project Kinetic that aimed to develop music generation algorithms with gestural controllers.

23rd March 2012

The project team designed and implemented a modular toolkit that creates music in real time. It is highly flexible and can be used by both music experts and amateurs, individuals with disabilities, children and the elderly. This is where the project’s true innovation is found.

The results have various applications: the system can be used in games with sound, in the creation of interactive music and in cognitive and sound stimulation. Consequently, the tool has a Kinetic gesture controlled interface that allows the user to intuitively control and interact with the music and create music through their body movements.

The project was developed by researchers at INESC TEC, including Carlos Guedes from UTM (project coordinator), Fabien Gouyon from UTM and the University of Texas at Austin (US). The Portuguese company YDreams also participated in this project that is part of the “Digitópia” project at the Casa da Música Music Hall, another of the project partners.

It must also be noted that the application GimmeDaBlues that was developed as part of this project won first place in the category “Multimedia Contents and Applications” in the Zon Multimedia Creativity awards.
