INESC TEC develops project with Tomorrow Options

INESC TEC and Tomorrow Options will be joining this November to start the LOCUS project. The aim with this project is to develop a technological solution that makes it possible to detect people in local environments without access to satellite navigation.

30th October 2012

Tomorrow Options, a spin-off company from INESC TEC and the Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto (FEUP), develops technology products in the field of microelectronics for monitoring people. Although these products are strategically geared to provide health care, they also cover related fields such as sports, leisure or competitive sports.

The company identifies the location of people in indoor as an asset for integrated solutions enabled by their products. And this is how the LOCUS project was born. It combines the knowledge held by INESC TEC – specifically the Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) –, in the areas of location, signal processing, communications technology, radio waves and software-defined radio – and Tomorrow Options’ experience in establishing requirements that make it possible to turn technology solutions into industrial products.

The approach to this problem is disruptive relatively to other existing solutions on the market. The project will run for six months and is coordinated by Sérgio Cunha, a researcher at UTM. The INESC TEC team involved in the project will also include two grant holders. The LOCUS is supported by the Agência de Inovação (AdI) in the form of a "Vale Inovação".
