INESC TEC develops wireless solution for PT Inovação

In February, the Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) concluded the Multi Radio Access (MRA) project, developed as part of a direct contract between INESC TEC, coordinated by INESC Porto, and the company PT Inovação. The main goal with this project was to design a solution that would combine access networks, with a particular emphasis on HSPA and WiFi, in order to provide wireless broadband access with a debit that is higher than the one provided by each one of the access networks individually.

For PT Inovação, the telecommunications operator, the aim was to create a prototype for a wireless solution with a strong potential for application in the mobile market.  The video streaming demonstrator was the chosen solution.

Developed as part of the idea contest for the Innovation Plan 2011-2013 of PT Inovação, the project was concluded after the final results and the demonstrating prototype were presented at the Innovation Plan Workshop, which took place on 8 March, at PT Inovação, in Aveiro.

The project team included Manuel Ricardo, José Manuel Oliveira and Nuno Novo from INESC TEC, and Álvaro Gomes and Pedro Neves, both from PT Inovação in Aveiro.

One of the main components of this project is knowledge transfer and sharing. As a result of this work, PT Inovação offered an internship to the project’s grant holder, Nuno Novo, who will help turn the project’s results into marketable applications.
