INESC TEC launches biometric analysis competition

INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) is organising the first edition of the Biometric Recognition with Portable Devices Competition that will be running until 22 June. The results will be presented as part of the ICIAR 2013 - International Conference on Image Analysis and Recognition, which will take place in Póvoa de Varzim, Portugal, between 26 and 28 June.

25th June 2013

Biometrics is one of the most studied areas for identification and security purposes. This competition will be focusing on biometric identification with portable devices, such as tablets and smartphones. The use of this type of devices requires robust identification algorithms to overcome the main challenges brought about by less controlled acquisition conditions.

In the competition, participants will have the opportunity to present their algorithms to acquire images of the iris and to record voices. The main purpose of the competition is to compare the different methodologies presented, and to become an event of reference for academic and industrial researchers, specifically in the areas of security and personal identification. The creation of a database containing biometric data will be an important contribution to the scientific community.

The organising committee included João Monteiro, Hélder Oliveira, Ana Rebelo and Ana Sequeira, all researchers at INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM).
