Last May, INESC TEC has opened the research programme MAT – Media Arts and Technology. The purpose with this programme is to promote collaboration opportunities in the area of MAT. The programme will be concluded in June 2015.
28th June 2013
With four partners – INESC TEC, the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, the School of Arts of the Portuguese Catholic University and the Higher Engineering Institute –, which already have a vast number of projects in this area, the idea is to promote future European and national projects, and thus create a cohesive research force locally (all partners are located in the city of Porto). Other objectives include joint publication of papers and an approximation to the business fabric.
The MAT includes three Work Packages, entitled “Interaction with Music Information”, “Social TV” and “Serious Games for Effective Learning”, and several contributions are expected for each of these lines, such as publishing several papers and developing prototypes.
Media Arts and Technology research combines emerging media, computer science, engineering, and electronic music and digital art research, practice, production, and theory. This relatively new field of inquiry focuses on cultural content (such as music, video and film, TV, radio, performing arts) and its integration with the most recent Information and Communication Technologies, including the field of Human Computer Interaction.
The MAT is funded by the ON2 – O Novo Norte programme. This is a multidisciplinary work that will benefit from the expertise of two INESC TEC Units – the Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) and the Information and Computer Graphics Systems Unit (USIG). The INESC TEC members integrating the team are: Artur Pimenta Alves (advidor to the Board of INESC Porto, the entity coordinating INESC TEC), Ana Rebelo, Carlos Guedes, Diogo Cocharro, Fabien Gouyon, Georgios Sioros, Hélder Castro, Hélder Oliveira, Jaime Cardoso, João Lobato Oliveira, João Leitão, Teresa Andrade, Marius Miron, Matthew Davies, Paula Viana, Pedro Carvalho, Pedro Silva and Ricardo Morla, all researchers at UTM, and Alexandre Carvalho, António Coelho, José Lino Oliveira, Leonel Morgado, Lígia Silva, Luís Magalhães and Maximino Bessa, researchers at USIG.
