INESC TEC presents preliminary results of work with the EDP

On 30 November, INESC TEC presented the preliminary results obtained following the contract signed between INESC Porto (the coordinating entity of INESC TEC) and the EDP Distribuição (Portuguese electricity utility) in April this year. The results were presented in a workshop which took place in Guimarães. The event was attended by about 60 senior managers at the EDP Distribuição, as well as two members of the Board of Directors.

The abovementioned contract aims at estimating the necessary investments by the EDP Distribuição which are a result, among other aspects, of connecting new facilities, as well as the allowances due by clients requesting new connections. The models that are being developed will be replacing those currently used by the EDP Distribuição. This happens because in recent years, these models have been providing estimations which are far from the real values for each year.

These added difficulties are a consequence of the progressive reduction of the economic activity reflected, for instance, in a decrease in building construction, as well as the legal change which occurred in 2007. This alteration has changed the rules for calculating the range of benefits. As a result, this has also changed the percentage of the amount that is effectively supported by the EDP Distribuição in relation to the total mandatory investment performed each year.

At the workshop, those representing INESC TEC, namely João Tomé Saraiva and José Nuno Fidalgo of the Power Systems Unit (USE), presented the objectives of the work, what has been done so far, as well as a set of preliminary estimates which will be consolidated in February. This is the time when the first stage of the work will be concluded and a report will be delivered containing forecasts for 2014 and 2015, as well as an application with the developed models.

The presentation of INESC TEC’s researchers was well received by the participants who asked for clarifications and confirmed the importance of having proper estimations of mandatory investments and benefits given the amounts involved and their impact on the budget of the EDP Distribuição.

The new stages of the contract will take place in March 2014 and in March 2015. The aim is to update the forecasts considering the final values which will already be available for 2013 and 2014, respectively.
