INESC TEC projects stand out at Web Summit

Two of the five most interesting business ideas presented by Portuguese entrepreneurs on the first day of the Web Summit are projects related to INESC TEC - Kinematix and SafeCloud.

22nd November 2016

The Web Summit is considered the greatest technology, innovation and entrepreneurship event. Kinematix, in particular, was short listed as one of the 50 companies, selected from a few thousand, with more requests for meetings with investors attending the event.

Kinematix

On October 27, Kinematix, a spin-off company of INESC TEC and the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), launched the TUNE, a wearable device that analyses running techniques and uses this information to create plans to help improve performance and reduce the number of injuries.

The TUNE consists of a pair of insoles with sensors and a pair of electronic devices that communicate with smartphones or smartwatches via Bluetooth, and an application where the data generated by the insoles sensors are combined with the GPS of the smartphone or smartwatch.

It is the only device on the market that acquires this biomechanical data in a real environment, which allows any recreational runner to have access to training information at a professional level.

Kinematix was created as part of the MIETE - Master in Innovation and Technological Entrepreneurship of FEUP and FEP (Faculty of Economics of the University of Porto), and supported by INESC TEC since the beginning. Headquartered in Portugal, Kinematix has a subsidiary in Austin, United States.

SafeCloud Photos app

SafeCloud Photos is a mobile application which originated as part of the European project SafeCloud (Secure and Resilient Cloud Architecture), coordinated by INESC TEC's High-Assurance Software Laboratory (HASLab).  The goal of this project is to make the data in the cloud inviolable, ensuring that existing cloud computing infrastructure services are secure, regardless of who owns the servers or the computers where the information is stored.

This mobile photo application is currently the safest on the market and has been developed by a team of HASLab researchers. According to Francisco Maia, one of the researchers responsible for project SafeCloud, the mobile app SafeCloud Photos “offers a level of security that no other app offers today.”
