INESC TEC promotes sustainable energy strategies for cities

On 2 and 3 July, INESC TEC hosted the second technical meeting of the European project "CitInES - Design of a decision-support tool for sustainable, reliable and cost-effective energy Strategies in cities and industrial complexes," in which INESC TEC’s Power Systems Unit (USE) is involved. The aim with this project is to design tools that will support the implementation of sustainable and efficient energy strategies in cities and large industrial complexes.

Several issues related to the project’s development were presented and discussed at the meeting, including the specification of requirements of cities and industrial complexes, the project’s achievements so far and the preparation of the next technical and administrative activities.

This project aims to promote a sustainable energy future in Europe, providing tools for the interaction between various energy vectors at different scales. Several tasks are being carried out as part of this work, such as assessing the impact of urban planning strategies and investment decisions in the economic, financial and environmental optimisation of local energy strategies. This includes the use of renewable energies, electric mobility, promoting the coordination between different energy vectors, developing smart grids and managing demand, evaluating financial and environmental risks, as well as devising strategies which are robust enough to withstand the uncertainties related to fuel prices.

All project partners attended this meeting, as well as representatives of the Italian cities of Bologna and Cesena, as well as representatives of the oil refinery company Tupras (Turkey). The members of INESC TEC in this meeting were Nuno Fidalgo, Mário Couto, Tiago Armando and Luís Seca.
