INESC TEC researchers in work placements abroad

Two researchers from the Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM), Inês Domingues and João Oliveira will take part in placements in Brazil and Japan, respectively as part of their PhD projects.

30th April 2012

Inês Domingues has begun her three month placement in Brazil at the Ultrasound Laboratory (LUS) at the Alberto Luiz Coimbra Institute for Post Graduates in Engineering Research at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). Inês is currently working on tools to detect breast cancer using information from mammograms and ultrasounds. Until now she had only been working with mammograms but her placement in Brazil will focus on ultrasound. Inês’ PhD supervisor is Jaime Cardoso from UTM and Wagner Pereira from Brazil.

João Oliveira returned to the Honda Research Institute in Tokyo for a two month placement. He had previously completed a placement at the institute in 2011. The opportunity arose from his PhD research in IT Engineering. João Oliveira is currently working on musical robotics with Fabien Gouyon from UTM and Luís Paulo Reis from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (LIAAC/FEUP) as his supervisors. The researcher had the opportunity to improve his knowledge of musical robotics and implement an interactive robotic dance system that is able to react to musical stimuli and communicate verbally with people.
