INESC TEC starts project on virtual sensors

On 1 June, INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) will be kicking off project “PCSA – Place characterization from sensing and acting”, a project whose purpose is to characterise locations based on data from virtual sensors.

The concept of location is now regarded as a key element when designing ubiquitous systems. In particular, several different services (such as product recommendation services online or smartphone applications) that somehow try to adapt to their social context and location.

This project aims to define a set of metrics and representations of these virtual places, automatically generated from the information on the presence of people in these places and their interactions with the existing services. Along with these metrics, a basic support system will be created to associate physical, logical and application resources to these places.

The intervention of UTM will be led by Ricardo Morla and will focus on defining the metrics to characterise locations. Other than INESC TEC, the PCSA also includes the University of Minho as the proposing institution. The project is funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) and will run for one year.
