INESC TEC supervises devices that measure the quality of DTT signal
INESC TEC and the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) are responsible for technically supervising a network of probes that are continuously monitoring the quality of the Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT). This work is part of project ICP-ANACOM. ANACOM is the Portuguese communication regulator.

Henrique Salgado, Sérgio Cunha and Henrique Miranda, researchers at INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM), are in charge of the project’s scientific and technical coordination and supervision. The researchers “will make sure that the technical decisions made are the most suitable at the different stages of the solution, from its design, to its development, testing and validation”, explained the researcher Henrique Salgado.
Project ICP-ANACOM tries to effectively identify possible problems associated with the bad reception of DTT signal in different Portuguese regions. The project’s pilot stage started in December of last year with the installation of four probes. In subsequent stages, a further 382 devices will be installed in different locations throughout the country. The equipment, developed by Ubiwhere and Wavecom, will make it possible to monitor DTT signal 24 hours a day. That information will then be sent via 3G to a central server for storage.
The project will be concluded in May of this year “and the resulting data
will also be useful to support a multi-frequency network for DTT transmissions
in Portugal. The goal is to reduce interferences and consequently improve
signal reception”, the UTM researcher concluded.
