New PhD holder at UTM

Qi Luo, a collaborator at INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) presented his PhD thesis on 14 June entitled "Design and Synthesis of miniaturization and Multiband Reconfigurable Microstrip Antenna for Future Wireless Applications".

28th June 2012

This work is based on the design of compact multi-band antennas and arrays of antennas for wireless applications, such as mobile handsets and USB dongles. The existence of a wide number of wireless standards means that today and future wireless communications demand devices equipped with antenna(s) that can operate at multiple frequency bands whilst having a compact size.

In order to improve the transmission rate of the new communication standards the researcher proposes the use of MIMO techniques (Multiple-Input/Multiple-Output) in wireless devices. This implies that antenna array is required to be implemented on the wireless device. However, the size reduction of an antenna has an impact on its radiation characteristics, as there is always a trade-off between the antenna volume and its radiation performance. Methodologies for the design of compact size antennas with promising radiation characteristics are addressed in this work by employing novel techniques for antenna miniaturization.

Implementing the proposed techniques and the experimental results proved the effectiveness of the proposed methodology.

Qi Luo, who is a Chinese national, graduated in Communications Engineering at Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology, in China, and completed his Master’s Degree in Data Communications at the University of Sheffield, UK.
