Team presents "Use of Data Science in the analysis of football matches" in Amsterdam

A group of researchers from the Centre for Enterprise Systems Engineering (CESE) and the Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support (LIAAD) of INESC TEC and of the University of Porto (UP) participated in the workshop "Sports & Data Science", where it had the opportunity to make a presentation on the potential of using Data Science in the analysis of football matches.

05th December 2017

The Portuguese team, formed at the time by Ana Fernandes (CESE), Carlos Soares (CESE), Cláudio Rebelo de Sá (CESE), Fábio Pinto (CESE), João Correia Pinto (CESE), José Carlos Coutinho (UP), Pedro Abreu (LIAAD), Tiago Cunha (CESE) and Vítor Cerqueira (LIAAD), was responsible for the development of tasks related to Business Intelligence, Predictive Analytics and Descriptive Analytics. Through the analysis of data collected in the European Women's Football Championship, which took place between July and August 2017, the tools created allowed a series of observations, including comparison of statistics between winning teams and other teams, prediction of shots on goal and trajectory analysis of players and teams.

The event, which was organised by the Leiden University and the Royal Netherlands Football Association, was held in Amsterdam on 15 November.
