Recently, there was a call for proposals of R&D projects, within the Engineering Design/Advanced Manufacturing area, involving educationally coupled research.

The Optoelectronics and Electronic Systems Unit (UOSE) participates in the “Automotive smart flooring based in photonics” project which was selected in this contest.

Managed by Professor Higino Correia from the University of Minho, the consortium includes, besides INESC Porto, TMG Automotive, FiberSensing and Engineering Systems Division of MIT.

The objective of this project is to develop an innovative concept of smart floor, involving optical fiber sensors, microelectronics and dedicated software that enables the monitoring of the strain of the car’s chassis.
