UTM/INESC TEC group celebrates 100th meeting
On 11 March, the Visual Computing and Machine Intelligence (VCMI) group, which is part of INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM), celebrated their 100th meeting. The group has 13 members conducting research on visual computing and artificial intelligence.
21st March 2013
The meetings started in 2006 when Jaime Cardoso, a researcher at UTM, created the group, but it was only in 2011 that the group adopted the name Visual Computing and Machine Intelligence. The group’s mission is to create a continuous learning system containing visual information, which can provide the future generation of intelligent systems with the ability to “reason” on visual data.
More specifically, the 13 researchers who are part of the VCMI conduct research on fundamental and applied problems related to visual computing, image processing and decision support systems based on an automatic analysis of these visual data. Practical applications include, for instance, image and video processing of medical contents, manuscripts, or even object and people tracking for areas such as surveillance and sports.
It is important to highlight that some of the members of the VCMI are also connected to the Breast Research Group, also from UTM, which have developed projects such as the Semantic Pacs, the BCCT.core or the PICTURE (initially PICASSO).
