UTM promotes "Open Day"

On 24 April the Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) at INESC TEC organised an "Open Day" in order to publicise the science and innovation work developed at the Unit.

30th April 2012

With the entire Unit being mobilised for this event, in a day fully dedicated to Telecommunications and Multimedia, participants had the opportunity to communicate directly with the reality of the UTM.

With a diverse programme, the "UTM Open Day" was marked by several moments. The day started with presentations by one of the Unit coordinators, Manuel Ricardo, who spoke of the Unit’s goals for the near future, and by the former coordinator José Ruela.

Then it was time for the scientific area leaders at UTM to present their work: Henry Salgado, responsible for the optics and electronic technologies component, Rui Campos, leader of the Communication Networks area, Teresa Andrade, leader of the Multimedia Systems area and finally Ricardo Morla, representing Jaime Cardoso, who leads the area of Information Processing and Pattern Recognition. These members were responsible for explaining to the participants not only the areas that they lead, but also the work that is being developed, as well as expected challenges.

The programme for the "UTM Open Day" also included visits to various laboratories of the Unit. The optics and electronics laboratory, located at INESC Porto’s building, was presented by Henrique Salgado. The laboratories of audio and music and microelectronics (located at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP)) were presented by Fabien Gouyon and Vítor Grade Tavares respectively. In the afternoon, visitants had the opportunity to see demonstrations of prototypes and poster presentations of projects relevant to the Unit.

It is important to highlight RobVigil, the world's first surveillance robot, which was recently featured in the Festival of Robotics. The robot was developed by the Units of Robotics, Telecommunications and Multimedia and Information and Computer Graphics Systems at INESC TEC.

Finally, the day was concluded with presentations of PhD students at UTM, who had to explain to their colleagues, in just one minute, their PhD work, their objectives and expected results.

A total of 32 PhD students at the Unit presented their work in a session that was called the "One-minute madness": Abayomi Otebolaku, Ajmal Azad, Ana Sequeira, Ana Rebelo, André Vidal, Anisa Allahadi, Christophe Soares, Cristina Oliveira, David Rua, Diogo Coelho, Dossa Massa, Eduardo Pereira, Fardin Derogarian, Ganga Bahubalindrini, George Sioros, Gilberto Bernardes, Hélder Castro, Hélder Oliveira, Hélder Fontes, Isan Ul Haq, Jaime Dias, João Lobato Oliveira, João Oliveira, Mohammad Abdellatif, Nuno Salta, Pedro Alexandre Silva, Pedro Silva, Rui Dias, Samaneh Khoshrou, Saravanan Kandasamy, Tânia Calçada and Yandre Costa.

According to Manuel Ricardo, coordination of UTM considers that the objectives defined for this event have been achieved and that this experience should be repeated in the future. It is important to highlight that this initiative is part of the Coordination’s strategy to promote cohesion and visibility of the Unit. This is, in fact, one of the suggestions of the SAB – Scientific Advisory Board during their visit to INESC TEC last January.
