INESC TEC’s Optoelectronics and Electronic Systems Unit (UOSE) has recently started an innovative project in the biosensors area , in collaboration with the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD), the National Institute of Biological Resources (INRB) and SOGRAPE, LDA (Sociedade Agrícola S. Mateus), where the aim is to develop an optical biosensor to detect DNA hybridisation processes which can be used in wine traceability.

InstitutionalThe Portuguese Society for Research and Development in Optics and Photonics is organising, in collaboration with INESC TEC and IT-Aveiro, the first Summer School on Recent Advances in Optics and Photonics, to be held between 27 and 29 June at the Faculty of Science of the University of Porto (FCUP). As part of this event, INESC TEC is also organising the 10th edition of the Symposium on Enabling Optical Networks and Sensors (SEONS), which takes place on 27 June.

InstitutionalOn 30th and 31st January INESC TEC received a visit from the SAB - Scientific Advisory Board following the last evaluation three years ago. The SAB is a group of leading international researchers that the Directors invite to evaluate INESC TEC and offer suggestions for the continuous improvement of the institute. The evaluation this year could not have been more positive: according to the SAB, INESC TEC has suffered exponential growth, it continues to strive for high-quality science and publications and it is an institute we should be proud of.

InstitutionalINESC TEC, in partnership with the University of Minho and the Faculty of Sports of the University of Porto, have developed training equipment that allows competitive coaches and swimmers to measure their biometric parameters and performance to improve their knowledge and gain better results.
27th January 2012
InstitutionalCláudia Ferreirinha from the Optoelectronics and Electronic Systems Unit (UOSE) at INESC TEC was one of the researchers awarded the Prize for Encouraging Research from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
06th December 2011
InstitutionalThe Optoelectronics and Electronic Systems Unit (UOSE) at INESC Porto was involved in organising the first international conference on the applications of optics and photonics, that took place in Braga between 3rd and 7th May.

InstitutionalIn this year, so notoriously marked by the economic crisis, INESC Porto has increased its budget from 10 to 12.5 million Euros. However, this is actually one of the most conservative budgets so far: close to 90% of the predicted income has been contractually guaranteed since the beginning of the year. With his feet firmly on the ground the INESC Porto President admits that despite INESC Porto having practically doubled in size over the last five years, “this does not mean an obsession with records”. José Manuel Mendonça explains that a group effort from all of the collaborators will be necessary to maintain this sustainable growth and he recognises that guaranteeing a high level of quality while growing so rapidly will be an enormous challenge.
10th February 2011
InstitutionalLuís Fernandes, a researcher from the Optoelectronics and Electronic Systems Unit (UOSE) and Doctorate student at the Faculty of Science of the University of Porto (FCUP), was awarded three thousand dollars by the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE).
02nd February 2011
InstitutionalResearchers Orlando Frazão and Pedro Jorge from the Optoelectronics and Electronic Systems Unit (UOSE) have been invited to edit a special issue of the magazine SENSORS by MDPI - Molecular Diversity Preservation International. The issue will be dedicated to Portugal and will be launched in 2011.
07th January 2011
InstitutionalThe Optoelectronics and Electronic Systems Unit (UOSE) is working on a new exchange project between Portugal and Brazil – AMBISENSE, which will make it possible to timely detect the existence of harmful agents on the environment.
15th December 2010
InstitutionalThe Optoelectronics and Electronic Systems Unit (UOSE) is currently developing a prototype to sense chemical parameters within the project “Study and Development of Optical Sensors to Monitor Environmental Parameters Remotely”. The project will be applied in the Amazon region, more specifically in the city of Belém, in Pará, where the rivers Guamá and Igarapé Sapocajuba present concerning pollution levels.
02nd November 2010
InstitutionalCarla Carmelo Rosa, researcher at INESC Porto’s Optoelectronics and Electronic Systems Unit (UOSE) and professor at the Faculty of Science of the University of Porto (FCUP), was the supervisor of a project developed by a team of students from FCUP’s Physics Department. The team, called “Physics Addicted”, was invited to launch an experiment in microgravity, in the context of the call for the programme “Fly your thesis” of the European Space Agency (ESA).
