In February, INESC TEC concluded ICARUS (Integrated Components for Assisted Rescue and Unmanned Search operations), a European project where the goal was to develop autonomous robots that could assist rescue teams in disaster situations. The project brought together 24 partners from nine countries. With a 17 million euro budget, the project lasted four years.

The R&D project brought together INESC TEC, AMBIFOOD, the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Porto (FFUP) and ASAE’s Chemistry Lab.

InstitutionalOn 9 and 10 July, the robots developed as part of project ICARUS were presented at the ICARUS Sea Trials Lisbon 2015, which took place at the Base Naval de Alfeite (Naval Base of Alfeite, Portugal). INESC TEC’s Centre for Robotics and Intelligent Systems (CROB) is leading the maritime component, as a result of their experience in aquatic robotics.

InstitutionalIncreasing the autonomy of the blind or people with low vision, allowing them to be included in a large set of activities and improving their quality of life, using a mobile digital platform – this is INESC TEC’s goal with project CE4BLIND (Context Extraction for the blind using computer vision), which starts in May and will last 12 months.

InstitutionalThe transportation area is typically associated with civil engineering (namely in terms of planning and infrastructures), but over the past few years INESC TEC has managed to gain a relevant position in this area due to the Associate Laboratory’s multidisciplinary nature. Transportations, mobility and logistics are the foundation of TEC4MOBILITY, an initiative that is taking shape to combine and promote skills in this domain at INESC TEC, and to interface with companies.
