A scientific cooperation project brings together 11 institutions from Europe and South America to drive the transition to cleaner and more sustainable energy sources, under a horizontal cooperation model with high social impact. It is called Energytran, and INESC TEC is one of the partners; the Institute will welcome researchers and support them in the development of technological solutions.

INESC TEC joined the Big Data Value Association (BDVA), a European organisation that promotes the research, development and adoption of Big Data technologies in a sustainable and innovative ecosystem. This is an important step for the Institute, allowing to advance the impact and visibility of INESC TEC's research in different projects, as was the case of InterConnect.

Five training sessions, five themes: over several months, the cycle of webinars "Sustainable Energy Transition in Agriculture" - organised by INESC TEC with the National Institute for Agrarian and Veterinary Research (INIAV), and with the support of the partners of the Tools4AgriEnergy project - will address questions like the introduction of PV systems in agriculture, robotics and IoT, energy efficiency and circular economy, as well as new business models and decarbonisation. The first online meeting will take place on October 16, at 2 p.m.

From forecasting the production of renewable-based energy to optimising the generation, distribution and consumption of said energy: there are many applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the energy sector. But this is only one of the paths towards the future of this sector, and one of the topics discussed during the event "The Shape of Energy to Come", organised by INESC TEC.

The XFLEX HYDRO project focused on developing technological solutions to improve flexibility in the European energy system. Results translate into more efficient and flexible hydroelectric power plants to boost energy transition. The project, with INESC TEC contribution, tested the technologies in three Portuguese plants.

SMHYLES is a European project that will develop and demonstrate new hybrid industrial-scale energy storage systems based on water and salt. INESC TEC is one of the 16 partners of this €6M project, supporting the design, implementation and demonstration of a hybrid storage system consisting of a salt-based battery and a water-based supercapacitor on Graciosa island (Azores).

Portugal addressed the European Commission's call for the creation of digital and interoperable buildings and electrical grids in Europe. The Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering, Technology and Science (INESC TEC) led the activities for four and a half years, with a budget of €36M and 50 partners, which include manufacturers, research institutions, distribution grid operators, IoT and ICT providers, retailers and final consumers. The outcome? A set of innovative results that will provide interoperability to homes and buildings, i.e., without the need to depend on a specific equipment manufacturer, so that devices, systems, and users can interact in a transparent and sustainable. All this within the context of the European project InterConnect.

Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc. (CEPCO), one of the largest companies in the electricity sector in Japan, visited INESC TEC to learn about the solutions that the Institute has been developing and the ongoing projects in power and energy systems - focusing on solutions for the energy transition. The delegation, accompanied by AICEP Portugal Global - Trade & Investment Agency, also visited INESC TEC's Laboratory of Smart Grids and Electric Vehicles.

With the increasing global use of green energy, it is crucial to use new energy storage systems. In this sense, INESC TEC will collaborate in the development of two tools within the scope of a pilot in Madeira, combining hydroelectric storage with pumping and batteries. The work is being developed within the framework of the i-STENTORE European project.
