INESC TEC was responsible for organising the second edition of the VISion Understanding and Machine intelligence (visum) Summer School, a summer school in artificial intelligence and computer vision.

Five infrastructures in which INESC TEC participates have been chosen (after previous evaluation and hearing) to integrate the National Roadmap of Research Infrastructures of Strategic Interest for 2014-2020 (RNIE) of the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). Two of these infrastructures are led by INESC TEC: the Smart Grids and Electric Vehicles Laboratory (SGEVL) and the TEC4SEA, a modular Platform for researching, testing and validating technologies to support a sustainable economy for the Sea.

Between 30 June and 4 July, INESC TEC participated in the REX2014 - Robotics Exercises, which took place at the Lisbon Naval Base (Alfeite/Almada). As in previous years, the goal with the initiative was to test and demonstrate robotic (and related areas) technologies for operations in aquatic environments in the areas of defence, security, search and rescue, maritime surveillance or monitoring.

Maria João Cardoso, Hélder Oliveira and Jaime Cardoso, researchers at INESC TEC’s Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM), have recently published a paper, titled “Assessing Cosmetic Results after Breast Conserving Surgery”, in the Journal of Surgical Oncology.

On 7 May, INESC TEC’s Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM)* organised an Open Day for companies. Project demonstrations, presentations of success cases and doctoral studies completed the programme of the event that gathered the entire CTM community. The goal was to showcase the quality of the scientific production and innovation capacity at CMT. About 20 companies attended the event that will hopefully lead to new ideas and future partnerships.

Based on the concept of “immersive media,” the project ImTV - OnDemand Immersive-TV for Communities of Media Producers and Consumers – has collected information on the consumption of audio-visual services in Portugal, and created a number of tools with potential to give viewers a more active role. Moreover, the project has generated debates on public service media.

A platform to record, annotate and process videos – this is the final result of project ASSIST, developed by INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) for the company InovRetail Lda. The tools created as part of the project are now being tested and validated and they will be applied in the commercial sector.

Paulo Portugal, a researcher at INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM), is the co-author of the paper “Availability Issues in Wireless Visual Sensor Networks”, published in February in the international journal Sensors (volume 14).

INESC TEC and the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) are responsible for technically supervising a network of probes that are continuously monitoring the quality of the Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT). This work is part of project ICP-ANACOM. ANACOM is the Portuguese communication regulator.

In January, INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) started working on the project “HiperWireless: Point-to-Multipoint Microwave Communications using the 17GHz License-free Band”, where the goal is to develop a point-to-multipoint communication system using the 17 GHz band. The system is composed of a base station and a set of client stations, similar to what is found in a 3G/4G network or a Wi-Fi network, for example.
