UTM publishes five more papers in international journals

INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) has recently published five more papers in international journals, this time in the areas of music, algorithms to detect and track objects in video sequences and optical communications.

INESC TEC team wins competition on methods to detect liveness in the iris

A team of researchers from INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) won the “LivDet Iris 2013” competition, which took place between June and July of this year. As part of the competition, participants compared different methodologies to detect liveness in iris recognition systems. The results were announced at the “IEEE BTAS 2013- Biometrics: Theory, Applications and Systems”, which took place in the United States between 29 September and 2 October.

In September, INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) provided specialised training services in “Radio frequency and microwave measurement techniques” at NANIUM, a company that develops semiconductors, located in Vila do Conde, Portugal.

INESC TEC participates in project to predict the aesthetic outcomes of breast cancer surgery

INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) is part of a European Consortium that has been working since the beginning of the year on a tool that will predict the aesthetic appearance of breasts after undergoing conservative surgery.

INESC TEC project evaluates lower limb pathologies

In October, INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) and Optoelectronics and Electronic Systems Unit (UOSE) concluded project PROLIMB – Electronic Sensing for the Prophylaxis of Lower Limb Pathologies. The goal with this project was to create a system to analyse the activity of the lower limbs of humans during gait. The information collected can help doctors make decisions about therapies to adopt, and assess the development of pathologies.

On 12 October, INESC TEC hosted a meeting of the DIME work group (Diameter Maintenance and Extensions) of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), the body responsible for standardising and promoting the protocols that govern the operation of the Internet.

INESC TEC concludes European project on multimedia contents

INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) concluded in October the European project ALICANTE – Media Ecosystem Deployment Through Ubiquitous Content-Aware Network Environments, a project that provides a new concept for accessing multimedia content regardless of the location of the users, including direct transmission of content between users. The final audit of the project took place on 14 October 2013 at CNRS-LaBRI (project leader) in Bordeaux, France, and the evaluation team rated the project as "Good".

INESC TEC researchers win Best Paper Award

Paulo Portugal and Francisco Vasques, researchers at INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM), won a Best Paper Award as part of the 11th IEEE International Conference on Industrial Informatics (INDIN 2013), which took place between 29 and 31 July in Germany. This is the most important event in Industrial Informatics and one of the most relevant conferences promoted by one of the largest IEEE Societies, the Industrial Electronics Society.

Software developed by INESC TEC wins international competition

INESC TEC has developed a software to recognise musical scores that was the winner of a competition organised as part of the ICDAR – International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition. This conference took place in Washington, in the United States, between 25 and 28 August.

Fabien Gouyon, a researcher at INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM), was awarded as part of the international competition “Reproducibility in Audio and Music Research”, promoted by the SoundSoftware.ac.uk service. The results were announced on 26 June.
