INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) has recently published five more papers in international journals, this time in the areas of music, algorithms to detect and track objects in video sequences and optical communications.

InstitutionalA team of researchers from INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) won the “LivDet Iris 2013” competition, which took place between June and July of this year. As part of the competition, participants compared different methodologies to detect liveness in iris recognition systems. The results were announced at the “IEEE BTAS 2013- Biometrics: Theory, Applications and Systems”, which took place in the United States between 29 September and 2 October.

InstitutionalIn October, INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) and Optoelectronics and Electronic Systems Unit (UOSE) concluded project PROLIMB – Electronic Sensing for the Prophylaxis of Lower Limb Pathologies. The goal with this project was to create a system to analyse the activity of the lower limbs of humans during gait. The information collected can help doctors make decisions about therapies to adopt, and assess the development of pathologies.

InstitutionalINESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) concluded in October the European project ALICANTE – Media Ecosystem Deployment Through Ubiquitous Content-Aware Network Environments, a project that provides a new concept for accessing multimedia content regardless of the location of the users, including direct transmission of content between users. The final audit of the project took place on 14 October 2013 at CNRS-LaBRI (project leader) in Bordeaux, France, and the evaluation team rated the project as "Good".

InstitutionalPaulo Portugal and Francisco Vasques, researchers at INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM), won a Best Paper Award as part of the 11th IEEE International Conference on Industrial Informatics (INDIN 2013), which took place between 29 and 31 July in Germany. This is the most important event in Industrial Informatics and one of the most relevant conferences promoted by one of the largest IEEE Societies, the Industrial Electronics Society.

InstitutionalINESC TEC has developed a software to recognise musical scores that was the winner of a competition organised as part of the ICDAR – International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition. This conference took place in Washington, in the United States, between 25 and 28 August.
