INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) has recently published eight articles in international journals in the areas of security and multimedia.

InstitutionalOn 5 September, INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) took part in a public session to conclude project Living Usability Lab (LUL). The session took place at the Microsoft headquarters at the Parque das Nações in Lisbon, Portugal. At this event the technological innovations of this project were presented and demonstrated firsthand. The aim with this project is to improve the quality of life of the senior population. The demonstration was attended by the scientific community and the press.

InstitutionalINESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) is participating in a European health project where the aim is to provide clear data, in breast cancer cases, which will help both patients and doctors make informed decisions on the most suitable type of surgery according to each case (including conserving surgery or mastectomy).

InstitutionalOn 13 July, INESC TEC organised a workshop to mark the end of project SITMe (Integrated Services for Metropolitan Transport), which took place at INESC Porto’s (the coordinating entity of INESC TEC) Auditorium. This event followed an information session on the 7th Framework Programme (FP7) calls for transportation and mobility.

The aim was to discuss work from different Units in this area and try to adjust them to the European Call on Security (FP7-SEC-2013-1).

InstitutionalGustavo Carneiro, a researcher at INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM), is the most recent PhD holder at the Unit. On 10 July he defended his dissertation entitled "Transparent Metropolitan Vehicular Network — Design and Fast Prototyping Methodology", which describes a network architecture that allows public transport passengers to have WiFi access from their mobile devices.

Institutional"Innovation at the Service of Companies" – this was the motto for the Open Day organised jointly by the Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) and the Information and Computer Graphics Systems Unit (USIG), which took place on 21 June at INESC TEC. This event targeted companies in the sector of Information, Communication and Electronics Technologies operating in the global market.

InstitutionalBy the end of June INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) will be concluding the project Living Usability Lab (LUL) – Living Laboratory for the Use of Innovative Technologies in Next Generation Networks, a collaborative R&D project between academia and industry in Portugal. The project aimed to develop technologies that allow senior citizens to become more healthy and active.
