Two years ago, INESC TEC's Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM) was challenged to create a solution for the management of mobile assets, in order to address the issues that large organisations - such as hospitals, industries or cultural centres - face in identifying and tracking equipment and processes, thus leading to the reduction of waste.

A presentation about automatic sign language recognition by Diogo Pernes, researcher at INESCT TEC’s Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM), was awarded “Best Oral Presentation” at the session on neural networks application and image processing – part of the latest edition of the International Conference on Machine Vision (ICMV).

Four INESC TEC researchers co-organised a national conference on Pattern Recognition, Image Analysis and Processing, and Computing – RECPAD, which was held on 31 October of 2019, at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto. The event aimed to promote the collaboration between the Portuguese scientific community in these areas.

«Producing Decisions and Explanations: A Joint Approach Towards Explainable CNNs» is the title of the paper, involving two INESC TEC researchers, which deserved the distinction of BEST PAPER at RECPAD – Annual Conference on pattern recognition, that took place on 31 October at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto.

INESC TEC has a patent granted in China for the first time. The accomplishment was achieved with the C4Mir technology ("Control Module for Multiple Mixed-Signal Resources Management"), which had already seen its patent applications be granted in Europe, USA, South Korea and Japan.

An INESC TEC paper in the area of medical image analysis is among the 10% most cited papers in the scientific journal PLOS One of 2017. With the participation of researchers from the Centre for Biomedical Engineering Research (C-BER) and the Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM), the paper describes a method for automatic classification of histology images of breast tissue biopsy into four classes: normal tissue, with benign lesions, with carcinoma in situ or invasive carcinoma.

Determining water stress in plants is a critical task for the optimisation of water-based agricultural inputs and contributes to more sustainable and efficient processes. With this market need in mind, INESC TEC developed a technology capable of mapping the water distribution in the vegetation. The innovation called Water Percept is among the three finalists of the «Entrepreneurship and Innovation" award from Crédito Agrícola, in the "Production, Transformation and Commercialisation" category.

With proven international experience in the Marine Technologies area, INESC TEC was on the spotlight at the Marinetech event, organised by the Hydrographic Institute (IH), and at the workshop "Linking Earth Observation data and Sustainable Development across the Atlantic", organised by the IH and the Air Centre, which were an opportunity for Portuguese and foreign experts from the Sea sector to discuss the challenges of linking Earth observation data and sustainable development in the Atlantic.

The Accurate-BV technology, a medical image processing tool for the segmentation of blood vessels, has been granted its patent in Europe. This is the culmination of the work performed for more than four years by Ricardo Araújo and Hélder Oliveira.

"Using Machine Learning to Improve Performance of Flying Networks" was the title of the Master thesis in Electrical and Computers Engineering, developed at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), which granted Baltasar Aroso the distinction of «CTM's Best Master Thesis of 2019».
