Matías Molina, INESC TEC researcher in Artificial Intelligence, received the PAIS Outstanding Paper Award at the European Conference on Artificial Intelligence, one of the most relevant AI events in Europe and the world. The EMERITUS project was the basis for this work: INESC TEC is using AI to improve the investigation of environmental crimes.

RoboticsFor the next four years, INESC TEC will lead an international consortium with a budget of €2.6M, aimed at using advanced techniques to measure environmental radioactivity. According to estimates, by 2028, new technological solutions will be available that can improve both climate research - particularly in estimating greenhouse gas emissions - and radiological protection for the population and the environment.

InstitutionalThe paper "Event Extraction for Portuguese: A QA-driven Approach using ACE-2005" won the Best Student Paper Award at the 22nd Portuguese Conference on Artificial Intelligence (EPIA’23). This research work led to the development of an event extraction framework for the Portuguese language. The solution differs not only by targeting Portuguese texts, but by allowing (in addition to the identification and classification of event triggers) the extraction of the arguments associated with the event, namely participants and attributes.

InstitutionalOver the next three years, João Gama, researcher at INESC TEC, will act as the editor-in-chief of JSDA – International Journal of Data Science and Analytics. This journal promotes the presentation and discussion of new trends and opportunities, and the exchange of ideas and practices, encouraging collaboration between domains towards leveraging the analysis and data science domains.

InstitutionalRicardo Campos, researcher at INESC TEC and professor at the Polytechnic Institute of Tomar, together with Diogo Correia, was one of the winners of the Arquivo.pt Award. The duo won the third place and an honourable mention by the newspaper Público, thanks to the project Arquivo Público, a web interface focused on the contents published on the newspaper's website over time, and preserved by Arquivo.pt.

InstitutionalThe Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters awarded Dennis Sullivan the Abel Prize in Mathematics, the highest award in the field, comparable to the Nobel Prize. The north American mathematician is one of the world's leading experts in the development of the Theory of Renormalization in Dynamic Systems. INESC TEC researcher Alberto Adrego Pinto had the opportunity to collaborate with Dennis Sullivan in the 1990s. This collaboration led to scientific work with great impact on the researcher’s career.
