In April INESC Porto began project KEP to look for new models to enhance the kidney transplantation process. The aim of this project is to research and develop new methods to facilitate and improve the decisions associated with kidney transplants that involve live donors.

INESC Porto project ShoeID is the key to the success of the Kyaia Group

The Portuguese Footwear Group Kyaia is one of the winners of the European RETA awards (Retail Technologies Awards) from the EHI Retail Institute. The Group was awarded the Best Enterprise Solution prize for their project ShoeID which was developed in conjunction with INESC Porto. The award acknowledges the improvements made by the Kyaia Group using RFID technology (Radio Frequency Identification) throughout the logistics chain of their international brand FLY London.

The growth of the institution and the addition of new groups means changes for INESC Porto Associate Laboratory

In this year, so notoriously marked by the economic crisis, INESC Porto has increased its budget from 10 to 12.5 million Euros. However, this is actually one of the most conservative budgets so far: close to 90% of the predicted income has been contractually guaranteed since the beginning of the year. With his feet firmly on the ground the INESC Porto President admits that despite INESC Porto having practically doubled in size over the last five years, “this does not mean an obsession with records”. José Manuel Mendonça explains that a group effort from all of the collaborators will be necessary to maintain this sustainable growth and he recognises that guaranteeing a high level of quality while growing so rapidly will be an enormous challenge.

INESC Porto develops automated system for the footwear industry

The Manufacturing Systems Engineering Unit (UESP) made recent progress with Project SIBAP, an Automated Balancing System for Production Lines. The system is geared towards the footwear industry and aims to design and develop an automated balancing system for Production Lines. The system will include graph operating sequences. It is suitable for labour-intensive production and it is linked to the concept and development of automated logistics systems capable of putting into practice the advanced balancing results.

INESC Porto winds up AC/DC project with positive results

The final review meeting for project AC/DC took place on 13th December in Stuttgart, Germany with all participants present along with assessors from the European Community (EC). The AC/DC project is a European project developed with INESC Porto as a member of the consortium. The project was created to develop methods capable of producing a personalised car in just five days and the results were certainly positive.

Jorge Pinho de Sousa, manager of the Manufacturing Systems Engineering Unit (UESP), received the "MIT| Portugal Education Innovation Awards", awarded by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology – Portugal Program in the Transport Systems category.

INESC Porto coordinates project on Cognitive Semantics in Collaborative Networks

The Manufacturing Systems Engineering Unit (UESP) is currently coordinating the project cogniNET – Cognitive Semantics in Collaborative Networks. With a two-year duration, this research project on the collaborative representation of knowledge will propose new theoretical foundations and methodological tools to help collaborative networks of organizations create and manage shared conceptualizations of work and businesses.

INESC Porto researchers awarded in International Conference

The Manufacturing Systems Engineering Unit (UESP) participated in PRO-VE'10 - 11th IFIP Working Conference on VIRTUAL ENTERPRISES. There, the participating members were awarded with second place in the category of “Best Papers of the Conference”. This event took place in Saint-Etienne, France, between 11 and 13 October, and it’s one of the most important conferences on Virtual Enterprises and Enterprise Networks.

The European project "Holistic, extensible, scalable and standard Virtual Factory Framework (VFF)" started on 1 September. Inserted in the 7th EU Framework Programme, the VFF project aims at supporting industrial companies, providing tools that make it possible to improve processes related to the design, management, evaluation and reconfiguration of new or existing industrial facilities.
