Four researchers from the Innovation and Technology Transfer Unit (UITT) and the Manufacturing Systems Engineering Unit (UESP) are developing their PhD theses at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (as part of the MIT Portugal Program) and at Carnegie Mellon University (as part of the CMU Portugal Program).

INESC TEC’s Innovation and Technology Transfer Unit (UITT) organised the second edition of the SEEW – Science and Engineering Entrepreneurship Workshop – Leaning by Doing, which took place between 9 and 13 de July. This event was supported by the Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde (I3S – the Institute for Research and Innovation in Health), by the Engineering Innovation Institute of the University of Florida and by the University of Porto.

On 30th and 31st January INESC TEC received a visit from the SAB - Scientific Advisory Board following the last evaluation three years ago. The SAB is a group of leading international researchers that the Directors invite to evaluate INESC TEC and offer suggestions for the continuous improvement of the institute. The evaluation this year could not have been more positive: according to the SAB, INESC TEC has suffered exponential growth, it continues to strive for high-quality science and publications and it is an institute we should be proud of.

“Innovation Dynamics for the Portuguese Footwear Sector” (original title: “Dinâmicas de Inovação do Setor Português do Calçado”) – this is the title of the INESC Porto study commissioned by the Portuguese Footwear, Components, Leather Goods Manufacturers’ Association (APICCAPS). The study concluded that innovation is a fundamental part of the footwear sector’s strategy that when facing market demands allowed it to reinvent itself and become less traditional and more innovative. This distinguishing factor, strengthened by the footwear sector over the years, was supported by INESC Porto and has placed Portugal among the world elite in footwear.

INESC Porto and the University of Porto Innovation (UPIN) have organised a cycle of workshops that aim to make Portuguese companies aware of the added value of implementing Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) Management Systems. In addition to the areas of promotion, learning and discussion this partnership also has a consulting component that evaluates the management of RDI activities in Portuguese companies and supports their implementation.

In this year, so notoriously marked by the economic crisis, INESC Porto has increased its budget from 10 to 12.5 million Euros. However, this is actually one of the most conservative budgets so far: close to 90% of the predicted income has been contractually guaranteed since the beginning of the year. With his feet firmly on the ground the INESC Porto President admits that despite INESC Porto having practically doubled in size over the last five years, “this does not mean an obsession with records”. José Manuel Mendonça explains that a group effort from all of the collaborators will be necessary to maintain this sustainable growth and he recognises that guaranteeing a high level of quality while growing so rapidly will be an enormous challenge.

Over the course of three years the Innovation and Technology Transfer Unit (UITT) will develop project FIRE-ENGINE–Flexible Design of Management Systems for Forest Fires. This incentive comes within the framework of MIT Portugal and Portucel Florestal SA and the Engineering Systems Division of MIT will also participate.
