INESC TEC was the grand winner of the international competition “Application of Modern Heuristic Optimization Algorithms for Solving Optimal Power Flow Problems”, promoted by the Power & Energy Society of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers). Vladimiro Miranda, director of INESC TEC, and Leonel Carvalho, researcher at the Centre for Power and Energy Systems (CPES), competed with an original meta-heuristic approach created at INESC TEC which proved to be the best.

Vladimiro Miranda, director of INESC TEC, has been invited to integrate the scientific council of IRESEN - Institut de Recherche en Energie Solaire et Energies Nouvelles, an agency of the Moroccan Ministry of Energy, Mining, Water and Environment, which started collaborating with INESC TEC last year, more specifically in project SECRETS (Sustainable Energy Clusters REalized Through Smart Grids).

On 4 July, INESC TEC welcomed a visit from two members of Bosch Termotecnologia SA, a manufacturer of heating and hot water systems. The goal with this visit was to “identify technical collaboration opportunities to develop domestic electric storage water heaters, involving an active management of domestic electricity consumption. The ultimate goal of reducing electricity bills,” explains João Peças Lopes, director of INESC TEC.

Carolina Marcelino, researcher at INESC TEC’s Centre for Power and Energy Systems (CPES)*, won the award “Vale-Capes de Ciência e Sustentabilidade 2013” (award for science and sustainability), in the category of “Efficient processes to reduce water and energy consumption.” The researcher received the award for her master’s dissertation titled Otimização de um Sistema de Controle Conjunto de Geração de Energia Hidrelétrica com o emprego de Inteligência Computacional (Optimising a hydroelectric energy system using artificial intelligence), supervised by Paulo Almeida and Elizabeth Wanner.

On 20 March, INESC TEC hosted the kick-off meeting of a technical consulting and service provision project in the area of energy storage technology. This project is relevant to the energy sector, not only from a centralised but also from a decentralised point of view. This contract was recently signed with EDP Produção and EDP Distribuição.

INESC TEC is the only Portuguese representative in a European project that demonstrated the existence of favourable conditions to integrate renewable energies, including off-shore wind power, in the European electrical system. The project also identified the need for a more active use of renewable power in certain services which are essential for the operation of the power grid.
