INESC TEC develops autonomous vehicles

The goal of project FLEXUS - Flexible Unmanned Surface Vehicles for the Internet of Moving Things, developed by INESC TEC’s Centre for Robotics and Autonomous Systems (CRAS) and Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM), is to provide a set of ten autonomous surface vehicles capable of performing missions designed and deployed remotely by the researchers over the Internet.

INESC TEC project develops services based on context for mobile devices

On 1 June, INESC TEC started a new project called “CONTEXTWA: Middleware and Context Inference Techniques from Data-Streams for the Development of Context-Aware Services using Mobile Devices”, where the goal is to apply middleware and inference techniques from data flows in order to develop services based on context for mobile devices. INESC TEC is the tenderer.

Project ICARUS comes to an end

In February, INESC TEC concluded ICARUS (Integrated Components for Assisted Rescue and Unmanned Search operations), a European project where the goal was to develop autonomous robots that could assist rescue teams in disaster situations. The project brought together 24 partners from nine countries. With a 17 million euro budget, the project lasted four years.

INESC TEC in another mining project

Portugal will be participating in a European project where the goal is to explore, using robots, mines that have been closed and are partially underwater. The project will provide five million euros to build the first robots in the world capable of operating underground, autonomously and remotely. The submersible system will be tested in Portugal, Finland, Slovenia and the United Kingdom.

Following the signing of a memorandum of understanding between INESC TEC and the National Institute of Informatics (NII), in Tokyo (Japan) in 2014, five INESC TEC researchers had the opportunity to do an internship at the Japanese institution.

INESC TEC develops underwater docking station for underwater robots

In October 2015, two teams from INESC TEC’s Centres for Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM) and Robotics and Intelligent Systems (CROB) have started working on project ENDURE, led by INESC TEC (project leader). The goal with this project is to develop an underwater docking station for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). The station will allow these vehicles to remain in the ocean for long periods of time.

INESC TEC researchers simulate catastrophes in Europe

A team of researchers from INESC TEC have tested the intelligence and the autonomy of their robots in catastrophe simulation scenarios. The group represented Portugal in the euRathlon, the largest robotics competition in Europe, which took place between 17 and 25 September in Piombino (Livorno, Italy).

Project ICARUS demonstrated in search and rescue operations

On 9 and 10 July, the robots developed as part of project ICARUS were presented at the ICARUS Sea Trials Lisbon 2015, which took place at the Base Naval de Alfeite (Naval Base of Alfeite, Portugal). INESC TEC’s Centre for Robotics and Intelligent Systems (CROB) is leading the maritime component, as a result of their experience in aquatic robotics.

INESC TEC is participating in a €12,6M H2020 project where the goal is to explore underwater mines. This will be a unique opportunity to explore Europe’s underwater mineral resources using safer and more environmentally friendly techniques.

FEUP/INESC TEC autonomous vessels win international competition

A team formed by researchers from INESC TEC’s Centre for Robotics and Intelligent Systems (CROB), and by professors and students of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), have participated in the 7th International Robotic Sailing Conference (IRSC), which included the World Robotic Sailing Championship (WRSC), where the team won two of the most important rounds.

INESC TEC participates in Robotics Exercises 2014

Between 30 June and 4 July, INESC TEC participated in the REX2014 - Robotics Exercises, which took place at the Lisbon Naval Base (Alfeite/Almada). As in previous years, the goal with the initiative was to test and demonstrate robotic (and related areas) technologies for operations in aquatic environments in the areas of defence, security, search and rescue, maritime surveillance or monitoring.
