Apps that consume less battery in the smartphones

18th June 2019

After three years and due to a funding of over EUR 150 000 from the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), project GreenSoftware Lab (GSL) provides, among other results, an online free catalogue about energy patterns: https://tqrg.github.io/energy-patterns/#/

“This catalogue documents several techniques for designing mobile applications in order to improve their energy efficiency, that is, to reduce the battery consumption of a mobile application", explains Luís Cruz, researcher of INESC TEC’s High-Assurance Software Laboratory (HASLab) and of INESC-ID.

The catalogue can work as a tool so that younger development teams don't need to resort to specialised collaborators in order to improve the performance of their mobile applications. In addition to this, the catalogue of patterns acts as a starting point for programmers or students who want to expand their technical skills in the energy efficiency area.

The use of design patterns to reuse efficient solutions in the software development is a frequent technique in this area.

"The long-term goal is to increase the longevity of batteries in mobile devices and to allow their users to be able to interact with them without having to worry about the battery level," concludes the researcher of INESC TEC.
