How do traditional Portuguese companies reinvent themselves while facing the challenges posed by the digitalisation?
11th October 2018
The debate will be divided in two perspectives. On the one hand, Veniam, Unbabel, Feedzai, Critical Software and Farfetch will represent the companies that were born in the digital. On the other hand, Público newspaper, INCM, RTP, Ikea Industry and Sonae MC will represent the companies that the digital recreated.
“For example, the digital revolution in the case of the media is not a Portuguese phenomenon, but a global one. In the debate, we will gather several companies of different types, however two of them are from the media industry, Público newspaper and RTP, where the changes caused by the digitalisation were huge. Let us take the example of the newspapers that, in the past, had their revenue ensured by the sales in printed form and by the advertising that they included. Nowadays, the new generations in particular are more interested in accessing the information online for free, which meant that the business model had to adapt itself in order to ensure the revenues. The same thing happened to RTP, which had to reinvent itself in order to ensure the revenues, and also securing the fulfilment of the mission of the public service television. But how is this done? And what are the consequences? This is the debate that we wish to have, gathering completely different individuals from government officials to entrepreneurs and to academics”, explains Artur Pimenta Alves, one of the organisers of the Autumn Forum, organised annually by the Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering, Technology and Science (INESC TEC) and Professor Emeritus of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP).
The Autumn Forum aims to create an opportunity for public discussion of topics of major interest to Portugal, from the point of view of both the economy and the public policies, particularly those that are strongly influenced by science and technology. On 23 October, the debate will also be attended by the Minister for Science, Technology and Higher Education, Manuel Heitor, in the opening session along with the President of INESC TEC, José Manuel Mendonça and the Vice-rector of the University of Porto, Pedro Rodrigues. In the closing session, the Secretary of State for Industry, Ana Teresa Lehmann will attend it, along with Pedro Guedes Oliveira, the main organiser of INESC TEC Forum and Professor Emeritus of FEUP, and João Claro, President of the Executive Commission of INESC TEC and Associate Professor of FEUP.
The interventions from guests will be conducted by António Murta, managing partner, co-founder and CEO of Pathena, and Yike GUO, Professor of Computing Science in the Department of Computing at Imperial College London and founding Director of the Data Science of the same institute.
