Lisbon hosts the second session “40 years of Science and Knowledge”, with Carlos Moedas, member of the Board of Directors of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation

06th October 2020

INESC was established in 1980, in Lisbon, creating a reference model based on independent and autonomous non-profit institutions, but with a strong relation with universities. This model became popular and led to the creation of new tech-based companies, focused on the knowledge and technology developed in the research institutes part of the INESC group.

“This session focuses exactly on this process of creating value by incorporating knowledge and intellectual property in new companies - many of them established by entrepreneurs with ties to INESC - which have later become national references. Of the more than two dozen companies established as a result of INESC's activities since 1980, we will welcome the CEOs of eight of those companies (four created more than two decades ago, and another four established during the last decade), so they can share their experience and recollections of a process that is quite often very rough, but always very enlightening”, said Arlindo Oliveira, Director of INESC.

Carlos Moedas is the main speaker of this event, followed by two panels composed of CEOs or founders of companies that were born within INESC: José Alves Marques (LINK/IST), João Nuno Bento (Novabase), Pedro Ramalho Carlos (Shilling Founders Fund), Luís Alveirinho (Altice), Vasco Pedro (Unbabel), Ana Teresa Freitas (HeartGenetics), Jaime Jorge (Codacy) and João Paulo Neto (Voice Interaction).

Leonel Sousa, from INESC Lisboa, will open the event, while Arlindo Oliveira, Director of INESC, and José Tribolet, President of INESC, will present the final speeches. A member of the Portuguese Government will close the session (TBD).

The event takes place in a hybrid format, with speakers present on stage, some participants in the room, and the majority of the audience watching via Zoom.

In addition to this session, the national celebration of INESC's 40th anniversary includes yet another session in Coimbra – which will address “The relationship with the academic world”.
