Portuguese institute organises summer school on Computational Vision and Artificial Intelligence

07th July 2022

Machine learning, computer vision, privacy and ethics in artificial intelligence will be the main topics at the 10th edition of VISUM. "This year, we are going to talk about privacy and data preservation in artificial intelligence models, at a time when we increasingly have process automation offers. Technological advances are important, many of them driven by artificial intelligence that is powered by a large amount of data. However, we must be aware of its impact and as researchers and developers of said models, we must explore more explanatory and secure algorithms," said Ana Rebelo, researcher at INESC TEC.

In order to create an innovative summer school, which is recognised by the topics discussed and the proposed programme, the VISUM 2022 organising team designed a training programme, composed of theoretical and practical sessions, which will be carried out by national and international experts.

Participants will also be able to put their knowledge into practice and build their own artificial intelligence model, presenting a solution to a real problem, within the scope of a competition. The challenge will be the creation of "an algorithm that supports the logistics chain of the Brazilian technology company Loggi, intelligently and automatically", as explained by Tiago Gonçalves, a researcher at INESC TEC, also stating that the winning team will receive an award worth 2250 euros.

According to the organising team of the summer school, the main novelty of this year's edition is the mentoring programme, which will bring together a group of mentors, with academic and industrial experience, who will guide VISUM participants and help them to solve problems related to their research and/or profession. "We welcome participants with or without experience in the areas of computer vision and artificial intelligence, so the mentoring programme, introduced this year, can fulfil its purpose - a less experienced researcher can opt for a more individual work that improves his/her knowledge and gives him/her a boost to pursue these areas", said INESC TEC researcher Sara Oliveira.

VISUM also stands out for its networking initiatives, namely the sessions led by Industry representatives, where participants can join debates and expand their network of contacts. "It is always rewarding to interact with colleagues dedicated to different work topics, in the areas of computer vision and artificial intelligence. We have an amazing multicultural environment. VISUM also turns out to be an opportunity for cultural learning and excellent networking,", stated Wilson Silva, a researcher at INESC TEC and a professor at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto.

With 10 years of existence, VISUM presents itself as a top summer-school in the field of computer vision, and has managed, year after year, to increase the number of participants. The last edition, organised online, brought together almost 90 participants from 20 nationalities. In 2022, the organising committee involves more than 20 people, consisting of a project team led by Tiago Gonçalves, a mentoring team led by Kelwin Fernandes (CEO of NILG.AI) and an organising team led by Ana Rebelo, Sara Oliveira, and Wilson Silva.
