Robot for exploring flooded underground mines will be tested in Urgeiriça

Researchers from 12 European institutions developed an autonomous robotic platform to research flooded underground mines. One of the robots of the platform will be tested on 4 April, starting at 11:00 AM in the former Urgeiriça uranium mine, in Nelas, Viseu – [40.512844, -7.896376].

Wireless device effective in deep brain stimulation on patients suffering from Parkinson’s disease

A group of Portuguese researchers created a wireless wearable device that assesses the rigidity of the wrist for supporting neurosurgical procedures of deep brain stimulation, which is already used on patients suffering from Parkinson’s disease and that may also be useful in Epilepsy or other neurological diseases.

Telling stories in 360º videos is easier now

In 2017, under the innovation fund Digital News Initiative, Google funded a project of the Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering, Technology and Science (INESC TEC) in order to stimulate the innovation in the digital journalism. Less than two years later, INESC TEC developed the Augmented Video 360 – an editing and visualisation tool for 360º videos with dynamic annotations in order to improve narratives. That’s why telling stories using 360º videos is easier now.

A robot for the automotive and aerospace industries will be tested in Porto

ColRobot, as it is called, will be presented and tested next Tuesday, 22 January at 10:30 am in Porto. This is the last demonstration of a European project that had a budget of EUR 4.3 million for developing robotic solutions that could be applied to the automotive and aerospace industries. The demonstration of the robot developed by the Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering, Technology and Science (INESC TEC) will be made in a Renault vehicle, both institutions being partners in the project that is now coming to an end.

Underwater mining is already possible with Portuguese engineering

Underwater mining is already possible. It proved to be both economically profitable and favourable for the environment. Ore mining in abandoned and flooded mines is possible due to the development of a robotic system, which is mainly composed by a 25 tonnes underwater mining vehicle, an autonomous inspection submersible and a barge to support the operation.

1.35 million euros to fund technological solutions in the Agrofood, Forestry and Environment areas

DIVA is the European project that is giving Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SME) the opportunity to present technological solutions in the Agrofood, Forestry and Environment areas. In total, EUR 1.35 million is available in order to support companies from Portugal, Spain, France, Greece, Italy and Ireland that submit innovative projects.

EIT Manufacturing - Leading Manufacturing innovation is Made By Europe is the name of the winning project in the manufacturing industry field that was launched this week by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT). EIT Manufacturing is composed of 50 European partners, two of which are Portuguese – Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering, Technology and Science (INESC TEC) and SONAE. Originating from 17 different countries, the institutions that are part of this consortium include companies of the manufacturing industry and of the digital and production technologies, institutions of education, training, research and development.

Educational project with Portuguese participation presented this week at the European Parliament

Researchers from the Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering, Technology and Science (INESC TEC) will be today and tomorrow in Brussels, between 20 and 21 November, at the headquarters of the European Parliament in the presentation session of the European project related to the educational area named BEACONING. The project was selected among hundreds of other research and innovation projects under the funding programme HORIZON 2020, regarded as a reference in the category “tech with a societal aspect” together with ten more projects.

Broadband and low cost wireless communications in high seas for ships are already possible thanks to Portuguese technology and can create opportunities to new businesses. Let us imagine a search and rescue operation at the sea, where the land and sea teams can be in constant contact by using the most modern multimedia applications. This is just one of the examples of a possible application of the technology. The solution can also be applied to the fishing sector and to allow the exploration of businesses in offshore wind power plants and oil platforms.

Portuguese institutions reinforce position in Europe in the Sharing Economy area

We are witnessing a boom of a new economic model, commonly known as Sharing Economy or Collaborative Economy, which presents great potential from both companies and consumers. In that regard, the European Commission through the COSME programme and with the support of the Enterprise Europe Network challenged several entities that work in Europe to help companies and entrepreneurs benefit from opportunities created by the Sharing Economy through a pilot programme with a budget of € 2,000,000. The goal was to identify existing collaborative platforms and to help Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SME) explore the potential of that economic model, taking into account the current regulatory environment at an European level.
