ISQ, the Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering, Technology and Science (INESC TEC) and the Military Academy Research Center (CINAMIL) are the Portuguese entities part of the project OVERWATCH (Integrated holographic management map for safety and crisis events), which aims to address the natural disasters that have occurred in Europe more frequently, with maximum effectiveness.

Researching innovative technologies for the sixth generation (6G) of mobile communications, supporting the digital transition process of the European business ecosystem through the demonstration of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) THz - this is the main goal of the TERRAMETA project. Led by the Institute for Systems and Computers Engineering, Technology and Science (INESC TEC), the project brings together 13 European partners to carry out tests in telecommunications scenarios.

The European project ATLANTIS, led by the Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering, Technology and Science (INESC TEC), launched a call to select and support start-ups, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), universities and research centres that develop robotic offshore inspection technologies. The applications are open until February 26; the selected applicants will be able to test their technologies without any costs.

A team of researchers from INESC TEC and the University of Munich tested a solution to classify seizures, the main symptom of epilepsy, using infrared radar and 3D videos. The study presents an innovative approach, which is the first to consider near-real time classification from two second samples, showing the feasibility of a system to support diagnosis and monitoring process (based on action recognition) that uses deep learning; it allows distinguishing between frontal and temporal lobes seizures (the two most common classes of epilepsy), or non-epileptic events. The results of this research were recently published by Nature Scientific Reports.

At the age of 30, Carla Gonçalves won the first edition of the international EDP Labelec Merit Award 2022 for best PhD thesis, thanks to her work "Renewable Energy Forecasting – Extreme Quantiles, Data Privacy and Monetization". The researcher at the Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering, Technology and Science (INESC TEC) developed mathematical models that allow reducing errors in predicting the production of renewable-based electricity, contributing to increase the renewable energy sources in the power grid.

These are some of the topics that will be addressed at the seventh edition of the INESC TEC Autumn Forum, promoted by the Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering, Technology and Science (INESC TEC). This year, the event focuses on issues related to the energy transition and how the environment, energy, and the economy interconnect. Governments, researchers, and entrepreneurs will discuss technical, regulatory, and environmental solutions to help define public policies that promote the decarbonisation of the economy.

The European Commission's Horizon Europe Programme recently awarded €7M to the European project CARE-IN-HEALTH, whose Portuguese partners are the Institute for Research and Innovation in Health of the University of Porto (i3S) and the Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering, Technology and Science (INESC TEC). The five-year project, involving 10 European partners, aims to develop and test technological tools for the prevention, diagnosis, and monitoring of cardiovascular diseases.

Making buildings more energy efficient, introducing the aspect of flexibility, reducing CO2 emissions, involving building owners, energy suppliers and investors, through an energy performance contracting model that benefits from smart buildings – this was the main objective of the European project AmBIENCe, with the Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering, Technology and Science (INESC TEC) as partner. How? By developing and providing a set of resources that facilitate the entire process of energy performance contracting, while introducing demand response and supporting the uptake or renewable energy sources, ensuring greater efficiency and emissions reduction at a lower cost.
