Abstract
In highly populated urban zones, it is common to notice headway deviations (HD) between pairs of buses. When these events occur in a bus stop, they often cause bus bunching (BB) in the following bus stops. Several proposals have been suggested to mitigate this problem. In this paper, we propose to find BBS (Bunching Black Spots) - sequences of bus stops where systematic HD events cause the formation of BB. We run a sequence mining algorithm, named PrefixSpan, to find interesting events available in time series. We prove that we can accurately model the BB trip usual pattern like a frequent sequence mining problem. The subsequences proved to be a promising way of identify the route' schedule points to adjust in order to mitigate such events. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PRODUCTION RESEARCH

Abstract
The integrated planning of several activities implicated in paper production can lead to remarkable gains in terms of raw materials and resource usage. However, activities such as order assignment, production sequencing and cutting planning are usually addressed separately while ignoring the interactions among these processes. But the quality of the solution resulting from the juxtaposition of the partial solutions is not guaranteed, and may have a significant impact in terms of inefficiency of global performance. This article considers production planning in a pulp and paper industry in order to meet a set of orders of diverse types of products, admitting the possibility of producing simultaneously in two or more paper machines with their own features. The developed approach, ASC-3Steps, considers not only cutting optimisation but also extends itself to the processes of assigning orders to paper machines and production sequencing at each machine. Minimisation of wasted paper is assumed to be the overall goal. A set of computational results based on real data is presented.

Abstract
The problem of selecting suppliers/partners is a crucial and important part in the process of decision making for companies that intend to perform competitively in their area of activity. The selection of supplier/partner is a time and resource-consuming task that involves data collection and a careful analysis of the factors that can positively or negatively influence the choice. Nevertheless it is a critical process that affects significantly the operational performance of each company. In this work, there were identified five broad selection criteria: Quality, Financial, Synergies, Cost, and Production System. Within these criteria, it was also included five sub-criteria. After the identification criteria, a survey was elaborated and companies were contacted in order to understand which factors have more weight in their decisions to choose the partners. Interpreted the results and processed the data, it was adopted a model of linear weighting to reflect the importance of each factor. The model has a hierarchical structure and can be applied with the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method or Value Analysis. The goal of the paper it's to supply a selection reference model that can represent an orientation/pattern for a decision making on the suppliers/partners selection process (C) 2012 Published by Elsevier Ltd. JOURNAL OF THE OPERATIONAL RESEARCH SOCIETY

Abstract
This study develops a framework that combines different management science methods to provide insights concerning the performance of retailing stores. First, the framework enables to specify appropriate targets for stores of a retail network using data envelopment analysis. This involves comparing stores within homogenous groups, that is, supermarkets and hypermarkets. Second, the framework compares the overall performance of these two groups. This requires the combined use of a Malmquist-type index and statistical tests. This index is decomposed into sub-indices for comparing the differences between groups in terms of the efficiency spread in each group of stores and the productivity differences between the best-practice frontiers spanned by the benchmark stores from each group. The hypothesis tests are used to verify if the differences between groups captured by the sub-indices are statistically significant. JOURNAL OF THE OPERATIONAL RESEARCH SOCIETY

Abstract
This paper describes a performance assessment of Portuguese secondary schools using data envelopment analysis (DEA). The assessment adopts a perspective where schools are viewed as promoting students achievement given their characteristics in terms of academic abilities and socio-economic background. Our sample comprised all secondary schools in Portugal with both basic and secondary education levels. Two types of DEA analysis are performed: one using an output-oriented model that restricts output (exam scores) weights to be linked to the number of students that have done that exam in the school, and the other using a model that restricts factor weights to be equal for all schools. In this model the weight restrictions are linked to the total number of exams done nationally. The first model is well suited for identifying worst performing schools and to assess schools that may specialize in certain subjects, whereas the latter is best suited for improving discrimination between best performing schools when pursuing the identification of benchmarks, as well as to construct performance rankings. Abstract
The purpose of the paper is to examine trends in the performance of the Portuguese construction industry, and identify the factors that promote excellence and innovation in the sector. From a methodological perspective, this study enhances the construction of composite indicators using the principles of the "benefit of the doubt" weighting. This involves the use of Data Envelopment Analysis to estimate weights for aggregating the key performance indicators of the construction companies. The paper also proposes a new DEA-based method to assess innovation within an industry, identifying the innovative companies and the extent of innovation. The determinants of good performance and innovation are examined using regression techniques and the statistical significance of the results is ensured by the use of bootstrapping. The study reveals that the Portuguese construction industry experienced a remarkable performance improvement during the 1990s, but this growth trend in performance slowed down in recent years. It is concluded that company performance is strongly affected by the national economic context, and that small specialized companies and large contractors tend to achieve the best performance levels.
