Service operation vessels for offshore wind farm maintenance: Optimal stock levels

Abstract
Service operation vessels are becoming the dominant mode for the maintenance of most offshore wind farms. To minimize turbine downtime, it is essential to bring the right components to the wind farm, while budget and volume constraints prohibit having excess inventories on board. This setting can be interpreted as a repair kit problem, which seeks to define a set of components that may be necessary for on-site maintenance operations in a given time period during which emergency resupply is costly. Current repair kit problem approaches however, do not cater sufficiently for some of the characteristics of offshore wind farm maintenance, including weather-dependent deterioration and the possibility to perform emergency resupplies. We propose mixed-integer programming models both to determine (tactical model) and validate (operational model) repair kits when maintenance operations are performed under different weather conditions. The models are flexible enough to be used with real world data considering multiple turbines composed of different deteriorating components, service operation vessels characteristics (speed and volumetric capacity), different weather conditions, and emergency resupplies. An important feature of this approach is its ability to consider detailed maintenance and vessel routing operations to test and validate repair kits in realistic wind farm environments. We provide valuable insights on the composition of repair kits and on relevant business indicators for a set of different scenarios. The practical implications are that repair kits should be adapted depending on weather forecasts and that considerable downtime reductions can be achieved by allowing emergency resupplies. © 2021 The Author(s)

Digital Innovation Hubs: One Business Model Fits All?

Abstract
Digital transformation is critical for the competitiveness of SMEs. Digital Innovation Hubs (DIHs) aim to regionally support companies in the development of new products, processes, or services, providing access to advanced technologies. Since DIHs have to be financially sustainable, it is important to discuss which business models are put forward in such complex arrangements. Our main goal is to analyse how DIHs, specialized in Industry 4.0 technologies and services, create, offer, and capture value. The research was conducted through a documentary analysis of reports about DIHs' Business Models, generated by three European initiatives (encompassing more than 300 DIHs). Results demonstrate that one Business Model does not fit all, since regional characteristics, which vary among differentDIH's, are themain drivers to define value creation, offer and capture. This work aims to provide DIH managers insights to help them develop sustainability strategies.

Impacts on business models resulting from digitalization

Abstract
The development of the Internet created new technologies that are changing the way of doing business, particularly Industry 4.0 in current days. One challenge of the implementation of new technologies is the change required from companies' business models. However, the literature concerning Industry 4.0 is mainly focused on technological innovations and less in their impact on business models. This paper aims to understand the impacts of the digitalization process inherent to Industry 4.0 on business models. To achieve this purpose, an exploratory multiple-case study based on semi-structured interviews was conducted in two Portuguese medium companies from two different sectors. Findings show that besides companies being able to change to a customer-oriented approach, individualized mass production may not be the only purpose of this transformation. Networking is particularly appealing for small and medium enterprises, once they usually have fewer resources to dedicate to innovation projects. Additionally, in the era of globalization, logistic costs are still an obstacle for serving international markets. Finally, social media are seen as an internal tool of communication for business-to-business companies. Being one of the first empirical studies of the Portuguese context, it aims to diminish the lack of literature concerning this particular topic and enable future researches on the use of business models as a management tool. Secondly, it intends to help managers develop or redesign business models adjusted to a more dynamic and competitive environment. © 2021 IEEE.

Innovative Learning Scheme to Up-skilling and Re-skilling - Designing a Collaborative Training Program Between Industry and Academia Towards Digital Transformation

Abstract
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Europe are conscious that their competitive position depends on their success to embrace digitalisation challenges. However, some decision-makers in companies discard digital transformation because they do not understand how it can be incorporated into their businesses. Therefore, academia, research centres, and technological clusters are responsible for building the infrastructures and providing the support and the training that will progressively change this mindset. This paper aims to report an experience on designing a training program to train the trainers under the digital transformation topic. To define strategies to understand better the companies (and professionals) needs and motivations and the requisites to deliver the training course, the focus group methodology was applied. In this paper, we present a training program methodology and structure that intend to respond to industrial requests and, in this way to accelerate the digital transformation of companies, especially SMEs.

Scheduling of Assembly Systems in the Footwear Industry

Abstract
In the last years, the paradigm of the Portuguese footwear industry has improved drastically to become one of the main world players. In fact, a lot has changed, from low-cost mass production to serving clients consisting of small retail chains, where orders are small and models are varied. In order to deal with such modifications, the footwear industry started investing in technological solutions. The industrial case presented in this paper fits that purpose. The goal is to contribute to the solution of complex scheduling problems arising in the new mixed-model flexible automatic stitching systems of an important footwear factory. The project starts by building an optimization model. Although the model has its own usefulness, the CPLEX program is only capable of reaching optimal solutions for small problem instances. Therefore, a recent metaheuristic, the Imperialist Competitive Algorithm (ICA), has been chosen to tackle larger problems. The ICA is capable of finding optimal results for smaller instances and achieving adequate solutions for real problems in short periods of time. Moreover, ICA improves the results obtained so far by the method currently used in the factory.

Abstract
The use of VR in industrial training contributes to reduce costs and risks, supporting more frequent and diversified use of experiential learning activities, an approach with proven results. In this work, we present an innovative immersive authoring tool for experiential learning in VR-based training. It enables a trainer to structure an entire VR training course in an immersive environment, defining its sub-components, models, tools, and settings, as well as specifying by demonstration the actions to be performed by trainees. The trainees performing the immersive training course have their actions recorded and matched to the ones specified by the trainer.
