Non-traditional processes in higher education in engineering: a conceptual mapping

Authors
Pereira, CA; Oliveira, P; Reis, MJ;

Publication
Brazilian Journal of Operations & Production Management

Abstract
Study of the adoption of non-traditional tools as support for Higher Education curricula in Electrical Engineering and Computers. We highlight the use of blended-learning, interactive and remote virtual laboratories, computer simulation, and methodologies, such as Active Learning and Problem Based Learning and their applications in the curricular units of the course. The study is a literature review with the systematization and presentation of the findings through a conceptual map. We concluded that the initiatives that have resorted to new technologies in engineering degrees, as well as reports of similar experiments on this topic, are reduced, not formalized in curricula, and ad hoc.

Design of Digital PID Controllers using Particle Swarm Optimization: A Video Based Teaching Experiment

Authors
de Moura Oliveira, PBD;

Publication
IFAC PAPERSONLINE

Abstract
The use of videos is a valuable and powerful tool which may significantly contribute to change and improve teaching and learning methods. Lecturers can made their own videos addressing specific topics suitable to fulfill their student's needs. These videos can address control engineering syllabus as well as complementary topics. This paper proposes using video as a tool to introduce the particle swarm optimization algorithm to students within a digital PID control simulation experiment. The experience preliminary results and feedback received from students are quite positive.

2018 13TH APCA INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON CONTROL AND SOFT COMPUTING (CONTROLO)

Abstract
Motivating undergraduate engineering students for the area of control engineering can be a challenging task. Posicast control can be used as a simple technique to introduce both open-loop and closed-loop control systems. This paper addresses several approaches to teach Posicast control involving simulation and practical implementations. A demonstration experiment using the robotic arm (UR5) is reported here as an alternative practical system which can be used to demonstrate Posicast Control. Results obtained from student's perceptions of the reported experiment are presented.

Swarm design of series PID cascade controllers

13th APCA International Conference on Control and Soft Computing, CONTROLO 2018 - Proceedings

Abstract
Cascade control is among the mostly used process control systems single-loop performance enhancers. The simultaneous design of series cascade controllers can be a challenging problem, due to the primary and secondary loops interaction. In this paper a swarm based technique is proposed to simultaneously design series cascaded proportional integral and derivative controllers. The design is based on the integral absolute primary error minimization, subjected to vector margins constraints both for the secondary and primary loops. Simulation results are presented to illustrate the merits of the proposed technique. © 2018 IEEE.

2018 13TH IBERIAN CONFERENCE ON INFORMATION SYSTEMS AND TECHNOLOGIES (CISTI)

Abstract
Information Systems projects are often complex enterprises, since they involve the adoption of information technologies in organizational contexts. As such, they should be carefully managed considering the various aspects that influence their success. This paper presents a literature review focused on the success factors of information technology and information systems projects.

Integrating MIT app-inventor in PLC programming teaching

Authors
de Moura Oliveira, PB; Boaventura Cunha, J; Soares, F;

Publication
Lecture Notes in Electrical Engineering

Abstract
The potentialities of using mobile devices such as smartphones for teaching/learning purposes are huge. However, in some teaching areas its use is still residual. The use of mobile applications in the context of teaching PLC programming techniques is addressed in this work. The MIT App-Inventor II is deployed to develop mobile applications for learning purposes. An android based application entitled Time-Counts is proposed here, developed to support the teaching/learning process of timers. Preliminary results regarding its use by students are presented. © 2019, Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature.
